A Wild Region
Kate Buckley
Moon Tide Press
PO Box 27182, Anaheim, CA 92809
9781605852331, $15.00,

Painting and poetry are two art forms that stand side by side and work well together. "A Wild Region" is a collection of oil paintings and poetry from prolific poet Kate Buckley, whose work has appeared in countless venues. Many of her poems are opposite full color art, adding a fresh dimension to her work. "A Wild Region" is a fine blend of artforms, highly recommended. "On Hearing Your News": MY eyes lie flat in my skull,/darkened, bruised//lashes whip-stitched to swollen lids -/sleep has once again been elusive.//My organs weigh more/than they did the day before,/swollen with unhappiness,/gorged with regret:/tiny fists in my stomach pummeling/ the hanging ball of my heart.

Douglas W. Huigen
Skifoot Press
PO Box 9715, Spokane, WA 99209
9780982362303, $17.95,

Natural catastrophes happen every year and in this modern era of 24-hour television news cycles, it is commonplace for cameras to be thrust before stunned survivors of hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, floods, and fires to be asked how it feels. The most that can be shared of the pathos and angst is a 10-second sound bite. That's why it was such a pleasure to encounter Douglas W. Huigen's "Cataclysm: When Human Stories Meet Earth's Faults", a collection of riveting personal stories of men and women who survived a 7.5 earthquake and subsequent rock slide that occurred suddenly and unexpectedly at Hebgen Lake, just northwest of Montana's famed Yellowstone National Park on August 17, 1959. The quake hit around midnight, with aftershocks collapsing the Hebgen Dam (built in 1915). Douglas Huigen has collected the personal stories of the survivors of this natural catastrophe and illustrated the events of the earthquake and its aftermath. The result is a fascinating description of how ordinary people react to an extraordinary event, surviving a catastrophe that saw 28 people that died in the event. "Cataclysm" is highly recommended for non-specialist general readers with an interest in the human condition as it is influenced and shaped by sudden and extraordinary (and lethal) natural events.

Cereb Press
823-B Burch Avenue, Durham NC 27701

The basic concept of human nature stated as "Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely" is as applicable to the church as it is to government, corporate business, or any other human institution. God may be perfect, but those that allege to worship God are most decidedly not. That's why two books by Greg Espinosa are especially recommended reading for anyone with an interest in the corruptions that churches as communities and as institutions are prey to. "The Church Exposed: Unveiling the Facade of Religious Organizations and Their Greed" (9780982267462, $16.99) is a detailed and notated indictment of how some churches have been undermined by their ministers and congregations seeking profits over morality. "What the Church Does Not Want You To Know" (9780979757235, $16.99) carries this expose further with illustrative examples of church leaders living as extravagantly as any corporate CEO, with their church headquarters evolving into massive and elaborate forms of 'corporate headquarters'. Today's church leadership all to often has forsaken the commands of Jesus to sacrifice in behalf of the least among us, to ignore the parable of the rich man failing to enter heaven, to equate the amassing of wealth and prestige with the humility that the gospel requires of all practicing Christians. Both of these deftly written pronouncements against the corporate mentality that has been permeating all too many of the Christian communities (including those created by radio and television evangelists) should be considered urgently needing reading as the beginning of yet another all to necessary reform movement within those same communities and their leadership.

Dollars is the true economic and historical saga of not only the U.S. dollar, but paper and coin currency in general. From the origin of legal tender, to the role currency has played throughout history, to why some currency and coinage (such as the Sacagawea dollar and the two-dollar bill) seems to disappear after being released while other forms stay, to the relative advantages of coins vs. paper money and endless efforts to prevent counterfeiting, Dollars is as fascinating as it is educational to read. Accessible to readers of all backgrounds, Dollars is especially recommended for public library collections. "It is alleged that the world 'wildcat,' when used as slang to describe something uncertain such as 'wildcat' oil well exploration, comes from issues of paper money by some Midwestern banks. Their designs were said to picture lynxes, or perhaps their close relations, the bobcats. When the banks failed, those bills became 'wildcat' notes."
